If you had a chance to swing by the first ION POP SHOP during the 2010 Winter Olympics, then you know what’s in store. Opening at 196 Kingsway at 10th Avenue on May 3, and remaining open until June 2nd, version 2.0 will be along the same lines, showcasing local designers and artists within its in-store gallery art space.

The ION POP SHOP will carry select vinyl from local musicians, accessories by larry. and Love Medals, t-shirts by Revolt, Some Product, and ION’s own line Limited Edit[ION].

the dark made a name for himself years ago by placing epic and sprawling stencils on the streets of Vancouver’s worst neighbourhoods. Tired of cutting stencils and dodging the police, the dark has moved on to photography and painting and has shown his evocative, haunting and, well… dark work in galleries all over the world.

“Ernie ‘10″ by Robert Mearns. Edition of 100, available till March 1st 2010.

Robert Mearns is a young and talented artist from Vancouver. Robert is known for his photorealistic portraits of interesting locals, his six foot five stature and his equally large personality. In a city full of talented artists, he seemed like the perfect one to collaborate on a shirt that features a dead Expo Ernie.

Limited Edit[ion] is an extension of ION that focuses on collaborative projects. We work with our creative community of photographers, illustrators and artists to create cool products that reflect the culture of the magazine.

Limited Edit[ion] t-shirts are produced in limited runs, and available for a limited time only. Released in conjunction with the print edition of the magazine, when the issue is off the streets, so are the shirts.

It’s entitled Butterfly Pie in the Sky! We’re super stoked we were able to get Camilla to do this as she’s been extremely busy with a big show at Thinkspace Gallery in LA, a graphic novel and her own clothing line. My God, when does this girl sleep?

Featured on the shirt is a psychedelic drawing of a Manananggal from Filipino folklore. What the hell is a Manananggal? Let’s hear it Wikipedia!

A manananggal is described as being an older, beautiful woman capable of severing its upper torso in order to fly into the night with huge bat-like wings to prey on unsuspecting, pregnant women in their homes; using an elongated proboscis-like tongue, it sucks the hearts of fetuses or blood of an unsuspecting, sleeping victim. The severed lower torso is left standing and it is said to be the more vulnerable of the two halves. Sprinkling salt or smearing crushed garlic or ash on top of the standing torso is fatal to the creature. The upper torso then would not be able to rejoin and will die at daybreak. The name of the creature originates from an expression used for a severed torso: manananggal comes from the Tagalog, tanggal (cognate of Malay tanggal) which means to remove or to separate. Manananggal then means the one who separates itself (in this case, separates itself from its lower body).
