Album Review | Violent Femmes - We Can Do Anything

It's a shame that The Violent Femmes' first album in over 15 years is titled so poorly. By the second song, the unfortunate, confusing, and grating "I Could Be Anything," listeners will realize that no, the Violent Femmes can't do anything they want-- or more accurately, they shouldn't. There are a few missteps like that on the album -- "Traveling Solves Everything" comes to mind as well.

That said, there are flashes here of classic Violent Femmes, and the album is worthwhile for that alone. "What You Really Mean" and "I'm Not Done" each evoke the emotion, lyricism, and brilliance the faithful have been waiting for for over a decade. At the end of the day, it's a great album, save for a few songs, just like most other Violent Femmes albums. I guess that means they've still got it.
