Finally, a New Jesus and Mary Chain Song and It Isn't Dreadful

After 18 years The Jesus And Mary Chain have announced they will be releasing their new album, Damage And Joy, in 2017. To tide us over until it drops next year the Reid brothers have debuted that album’s first single, “Amputation”. Since their reunion in 2007 JAMC have been teasing new material and other than a one off, “All Things Must Pass” in 2008, this is the first taste of what they have been working on and I am delighted to say it’s nice to have them back.

“Amputation” is classic Jesus And Mary Chain. Kicking the proceedings off with a blast of filtered feedback, the song settles right in with a steady drumbeat accented with tambourine and some vintage Reid Brothers harmonies. Produced by Killing Joke’s Martin Glover and featuring their touring drummer Brian Young and former Lush bassist Phil King, the brothers have crafted something that both pays tribute to their past while seemingly helping to move their catalogue forward. The band honestly hasn’t changed things up much since their start in the early 80s but it is refreshing to hear them sounding so comfortable and confident with what they are doing now.

Being who they are I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the Reid’s begin to throw insults, and punches, at each other but in the meantime it’s so great to hear them surfing that familiar wave of distortion and ennui into the future.
