FINK | Hard Believer [ALBUM REVIEW]

On FINK’s new album Hard Believer, the title track starts out simply with the sound of an acoustic guitar and a lone stomping foot. It sounds almost Jeremy Enigk-esque when FINK starts to sing, “I can see the light coming.” It’s a strong opening statement from an album that doesn’t really go anywhere from there.

Produced by Billy Bush (Garbage, Beck), Hard Believer has a rich musical palette. There’s a lot going on in all of these songs and the parts are all handled with the proper care. The main problem is that it quickly becomes derivative. Each song is mid-tempo, starts quietly and builds to the same large crescendo. Rinse and repeat.

FINK said, on this album, they wanted to go deeper than they have before but for music with this much gravitas there’s practically no point of view. On “Shakespeare” the band succulently sums up the listener’s experience with the chorus, “You taught me so much about you, yet I learned nothing.”

While FINK does a great job of sonically gift-wrapping these songs, it leaves us wondering why we’ve spent any of our time unwrapping an empty box.

Hard Believer is out now and is available for purchase or streaming here
