Music festivals are overwhelming. So many great acts, so much going on, all at the same time. All you can really do is make educated guesses and hope what you chose is worth it, and cooler than the thing going on down the street. With so much at this year’s POP Montreal, it was a safe to say that wherever you were, it would be worth it.
As soon as Humans took the stage to close out ION's Showcase at POP Montreal, with Boompa and Hybridity, people couldn’t stop moving. The music, so direct, so instantly gratifying, so much fun, jumped, leapt and then took off, almost seeming to be dancing itself, to be leading the way in a procession.
Two young women wrapped in plastic jumped out onto the stage and took their place at their stations, as thrilled as their audience to be there. Moments later out comes Vancouver-born, Montreal-bred Grimes, glowing, hungry, ready to do her thing, to be herself.
What is FNC? The Festival du nouveau cinéma is about a spirit: the spirit of good company, revelry and fun. Every edition is a chance to get together and celebrate a shared passion for film around each new lineup. The eleven-day Festival is designed as a space devoted to discussions, meetings and sharing, where film fans come together with artists and professionals to exchange ideas in an informal setting.

With Toronto having their Fan Expo in August, and Montreal having Comic Con in September, we thought that it was pretty fitting to talk about the Star Wars Origami book by Chris Alexander. We know it is challenging enough to make a simple paper airplane, but now you can blow you friends minds by folding up your own Yoda, Darth Vader, or Millenium Falcon.
Are you in a band? Do you want to play at POP Montreal? If you answered "yes" to these questions, you still have time to enter the Battle Of The Bands competition for POP Montreal. But not a whole lot. The contest closes August 1st.
The winning band will play two sets during the festival, which runs from September 19 to 23. Up to five members will receive artist passes, round-trip airfare, and four-star hotel accommodations for three nights.
